AONW 2009 Session Brain Dump: System Dynamics

This session ranged from the abstract to the more concrete. These book sounded interesting to me: Managing the White Space, and, How Organizations Work. A quote (that really needs its context): "[An important thing is] making people aware their in a system".

I found the most interesting discussion revolved around being aware of our interactions with others, being able to categorise the patterns in behaviour, and deliberately changing our behaviour and observe how that effects our own interactions.

Another topic that interests me that came up is that of all the unspoken communication (and potential for misinterpretation). Paraphrasing was given as a way of reducing miscommunication.

One of my favorite quotes about systems is, "Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets." Variously attributed to Isaac Asimov, Dr. Paul Batalden, W. Edwards Deming, and others. Whoever said it, it makes the point that if you don't like the results you get now, you have to change the system you have. One set of results are the range of system dynamics produced. Of course, from system to system, organization to organization, the dynamics can look pretty familiar, yet each set is home-grown and could manifest differently if the system had a different design.
